DEAPS 2005

DEAPS 2005 I realize I went on this mindblowing trip with MIT 3 years ago and never blogged about it. Well, Im going to now, because someone asked me if I thought DEAPS would be fun. Would it be fun or would it be a waste of time/money? they ask. As someone who theyd heard had participated in a pre-orientation program they thought Id be able to help. Instead, I wrote back, dude hang on Im totally going to blog about this, and didnt for a few days. Thats because I actually got busy with my UROP. Blah blah blah motor trouble turns one way but not the other why me dont leave me alone with this oh for gods sake watch out for the 1000 dollar star plate. It was all resolved and put back together, at least all the screws appear to be in their right holes, in a 10 hour marathon lab day, which was today, and thats why I sit down and write this. The motor is turning. Ive destroyed nothing. Thats a good day. 3 years ago at this time, life couldnt have been moving faster. Who was I? I was a recent graduate of Hamden High School, #6 in my class, good grades fine scores, decent essays, and for some unknown cosmic reason, MIT bound. And from then on, bound to MIT. I say this cause I dont think anyone ever escapes the tether of this place, theres something about these walls, something homely and subtle that just so gently enough creeps its way under your skin, without notice over the course of years, fuses with your bones, phases through the walls of your veins, until at some point you dont know any more where you end and this place begins. Sometimes its so quiet here, or nothing is moving, or everything is moving, or the rush of people you wouldnt believe. I havent decided which of these MITs feels most like home to me. I didnt know all this then. My perception of MIT was all fire and lights. (I was temped in EC during CPW) How much is the real MIT like that? Maybe 5%. And its a good thing, I think. Because, really, you will find your niche. Freshman year I considered an EAPS major (course 12), DEAPS was going to Yellowstone and I was going with them. If youre taking a trip with an Freshman Pre-Orientation Program this year, several factors will probably combine to make this one of the more exhilarating, memorable experiences of your life. I. Everything was a new thing and it lasted forever. 16 kids or so went to yellow stone with me and several professors and graduate students. I was amazed by the most mundane exchanges because they were with MIT students. They were elite company, they were just like me, and I was sure each one of them was smarter than I was. 9 days and 8 nights was the itinerary, if I recall correctly. We would camp in the park, at an altitude of about 8000 feet, near Yellowstone Lake, days would be dry and sweaty, nights would be near freezing. We brought gear. On the first day we flew into bozeman montana felt small against the wide flat terrain and packed into several white vans (to be later christened with various yellowstone-related names, Bison Without A Cause is the one I always tried to ride in) and drove toward the distant mountains. On the way there a flat tire. II. I shared a tent with Tamara and Danielle. It was something like a 6 person tent occupied by 3 people which sounded great at sundown when we were pitching but turned on us right quick as soon as the temperatures plunged and boy did it ever. We coped by huddling in one corner of the tent and leaving the rest empty and cold and air. Some nights I woke up miserable. One night I had to pee and oh how I tried to fall back to sleep and hold it til morning, grappled terribly with the decision and finally moving as little as possible, switched on the flashlight by my pillow and watched my breath in the air for a while working up the nerve. Another night I was sure my head was on fire and I sat up in my sleeping bag and scratched and scratched and I could swear 1000 bugs couldnt have made it itch so bad. A few nights it rained and after the first I never laid out my clothes to dry on the ground outside again. III. Our first full day at the park we walked through a marsh. We were headed to Sylvan Springs, an off-the-map site at Yellowstone gained access to only with a research license (which was pretty awesome for a prefrosh). Getting there sucked. Taking their advice Id dressed in layers. The early morning hours (6am wakeup time) called for sweatpants, 2 sweatshirts and a jacket. Under that I skeptically slipped in a pair of shorts and a black tanktop. We left before 8am. I brought my backpack, which before we even parked our vans (at around 10am), became home to the jacket and both sweatshirts. We were an impressive sight, a 4-van caravan everywhere we went. We were told to keep on our long pants for walking through tall grass. The way there was hours of hiking. Here Ill post a couple pictures I took during the hike. Sylvan Springs had been a lush green tourist mecca. A geological change a few decades ago caused the water in the hot springs to turn into sulfuric acid. Ever since its been oozing down the sides of the hills, killing all the vegetation in its way. Sylvan Springs as we saw it was a whitewashed ghost of its former self. Thats me in the black tanktop. It was still beautiful, as only a sight like that could be. We took some measurements, which even then I saw as symbolic but still made you feel like a bit of a budding scientist. My shoes were soaked, the kids with boots that day were the clear winners, and my pants up to my knee. Thats why I laid them out that night. To dry. I found them in the morning about 20 feet down hill in a wet, muddy, pile. I threw them in the dumpster. My shoes were never rescuable either. They started stinking unbelievably that next night and just only got danker and more horrible as time went on. We cooked at night, vegetarian meal because of the vegetarian in the group. Pasta and corn and all kinds. Lit a fire to keep warm. Bed time was whenever the fire went out. IV. One night it was a clear lovely night and a group of us drove down in a van to the widest open space we could find in the dark (which was, funny enough, a parking lot down by the lake) and looked up. I was seeing the milky way the cross-section of our own galaxy like a broad stroke of a paint brush across the sky and I couldnt believe it. There were more stars than I could take in at once. I stared and stared. It made me dizzy so I laid down on the ground and I kept on staring. Its weird thinking back. Maybe it was then that I developed the love for telescopes, that I decided I could be an astrophysicist. V. We drove by the lake on our way anywhere, every evening it was a dark void and every morning it was brilliant light. V.(a) Sometimes buffalo crossings stopped traffic for hours. VI. I was petrified on the slopes of the petrified forest. We climbed a vertical 1000 feet, some of the way on our hands and knees on loose rocks. The slope was enough to give you vertigo. I was sure I was going to die. I found a fossil. Below us were wide valleys carved out by glaciers during the ice age. They left huge rocks scattered around like dust on the valley floor. On our way up we saw far below us a black bear roaming the clearings. On the way back down after our picnic lunch I got separated from the group and as I passed through the region of the sighting I made as much noise as possible and fashioned a weapon out of sticks. Some time later I slipped on a loose rock on my way down and slid some 20 feet on my butt down the mountain. That night I spent a couple of minutes being really thankful for being alive. VI. Wednesday halfway through the week we each took a $2 shower. The girls got to wash their hair, back in the vans everyone looked beautiful. Smelled great. Laughed a lot. VII. Day trip to the Grand Tetons. A lift took us from 6000 to elevation 10,000 ft. The temperature dropped from 65 to 27 degrees in the broad day. Hiking around up there was tough. A bit of ill-advised running knocked me straight to the ground, I took way longer than I thought possible recovering. The view was unreal. VIII. We climbed to the top of a hill to look down on Grand Prismatic Spring. Later, we found ourselves on another hill facing a beautiful, snaking river. We learned about the microbes that give the hot spring color and mark it out in isothermals, the flood pattern of rivers, the migration of waterfalls, rhyolite rocks and flows, volcanic breccia, kinematic shock patterns by the time we headed back it was starting to look like rain. Sliding down a fault: IX. I snapped pictures here and there. Sometimes it was all I could do to just take it in. The age of the place was written plainly on everything we could see and touch. The gravity of it all was overwhelming. If you stayed really still you could almost feel the earth shift and the mountains turn. Heres something truly impressive. I love this picture: you can see the two layers of deposits one on top of the other put there by 2 giant eruptions, the first of which formed the yellowstone caldera and the yellowstone lake. The bottom layer is 2.1 million years old, the top 650,000. Like a huge, slowly morphing, rocky birthday cake. X. You know, memories are all we have to remind us that weve lived. You dont need to find it in an FPOP, of course. But I always advise freshmen to sign up for them anyhow. Because sometimes its putting MIT in context, sometimes its that feeling of getting out there, sometimes its just what you need for your beginnings on the world stage. And because it is probably just so much better than whatever else you could have planned for the week before orientation. Because, what if it does change your life? Im so excited for you. Now is the best time to be alive. As I said the trip was 9 hot days and 8 cold cold nights. It had begun with a 4 van procession on the wide open roads of the high plains and so thats where it ended. We were so tired we were napping on the floor of the airport. We were so dirty, too. But coming back to Boston to my penguin patterned temp room in EC and showers and beds and classes and changes, I kinda knew instinctively that Id never be the same for it. And I havent. I met with three different individuals whom were new to training and nutrition. I explained the type of research I was doing, and asked them if they would be comfortable to tell me 3 specific limiting factors they are facing/have faced within their fitness journey. The first individual (Mona)explained thatshe was not including enough vegetables within her diet;she turned to food to help them cope with their emotions;she wasnot completely sure how to plan out healthy balanced meals for herself as no one had ever shown her. I let Mona know that I would be happy to help her tackle these limiting factors taking it one step at a time. We started with the amount of vegetables she has during the day, and I suggested that she keep track of her food she eats during the day in a chart I provided for her. I let her know that would be a good way to start so we can visually see a record of what she eats on a daily basis. I told her we could meet after 3 days to see what her chart display ed on her food choices. This record was also the suggestion for her to keep track of what food she eats as comfort since she stated she eats unhealthy to cope at times. After 3 days Mona and I met and we went over her food record. We discussed how it is important to have a fist of vegetable with each meal, a palm portion of protein with each meal, one cupped handful of carb foods with each meal, and a thumb of fat with most meals (Hatfield, 2018, p.599). We then discussed how this method will also help with her balancing her food groups as well. The last thing we covered was how she could improve on coping with her emotions by subbing an unhealthy food craving with an activity or hobbyshe would enjoy. She liked this idea as itshe felt it could take her mind off of her food, and mood. We discussed the importance of stress management and how it includes rest and recovery-a rested will is a stronger will (Hatfield, 2018, p.606). I let Mona know that I would be happy to continue to h elp her through this process as she appeared to open up to me about her limiting factors. I let her know that I would check back in with her in 3 days to discuss her progress. The second individual (Dianna) explained that she struggles with eating enough protein during her day as her job is very demanding. She tends to not sleep well, therefore only going on 4-5 hours a sleep a night. Third, she said that her meals she eats are do not make her feel full as she does feel that she has time to balance them out. Dianna is under a lot of stress running her own business, and her exercise time is one of her only escapes from her job. I asked her if she felt she could find the time to keep a diary of her foods she eats for a course of 3 days, and she agreed to do so. Before I left the meeting with her I told her we would meet back at the gym in 3 days and go over her food chart.Keep in mind Dianna is 5 3 and 140 pounds. 3 days went by and she met me back at the gym after work and I could see that her breakfast consisted of a rice crispy bar, and a glass of orange juice. Her lunch consisted of a pack of peanut butter crackers (6 cracker pack), and aPepsi max. I explained the importance of drinking water to Dianna, and she said that she knows it is just hard to drink a lot as she only likes it super cold. Dianna is super nice, but she is an older client and I could see she is set in her ways. I could see that she may be a tough one to get through too, but I was determined to try and coach her with some nutrition tips. She was open to listening to me as she said she knows she needs to eat better, and balance her meals. I asked her if she could try an experiment for one week starting out with a meal plan I provide and see if she feels any different with her energy levels. She agreed. Ididask her what her energy felt like on a day shehas worked all day, then worked out and she said about a 5 on a 1-10 scale.The plan included the recommended amount for women which was 1 palm portion or protein dense foods with each meal, 1 fist of vegetables with each meal, 1 cupped handful of carb dense foods with each meal, and an entire thumb of fat dense foods with most meals (Hatfield, 2018, p.599). I would also recommend to her that she shouldincrease her sleep time to 8 hours a night to see how she feels after a week experimenting. At the end of the period I would ask Dianna what her energy level would feel like to see if it had increased closer to the 10 on the scale stated above. I would go over her overall protein intake to see if she followed the recommended portions I suggested as well. The third individual (Dallas) I met with that was new to the exercise and training scene told me that he skips meals at times, then eats meals that are too large where he feels bloated. He will work straight through lunch some days, and then eat a big supper at night as he feels like he is starving. He went on to tell me that doing the work of eating healthy is har d at times as he is surrounded by his friends that like to go eat at places where the food is not so healthy. I did ask him if his friends are the type that can eat whatever and never gain weight, and he said they are and that he doesnt think that is fair as he has to work so hard to try and stay healthy. I explained that is a frustrating part of this lifestyle, anda person doeswant to go eat with friends as I could seeDallas was a sociable person. Dallas then told me that he does not include the recommended amount of vegetables in his day either, but he does try and make time to eat at least one serving a day. He loves eating green beans and asparagus on the grill. With Dallas I incorporated the same kind of plan like I did with Dianna. I had him take a chart I provided to him wherehe is to take a diary ofwhat he eats for 3 days. I explained to him the daily recommendations for balanced meals with each mea which included: 2 palm portions of protein, 2 fists of vegetables, 2 cupp ed handfuls of carbs, and 2 thumbs of fat dense foods (Hatfield, 2018, p.598).I wanted him to try and understand theimportance of not skipping meals as he may not get the nutrients his body needs. I told him I would check back with him in three days and see how he feels, and to see how his energy level improves. As with any client, I will make sure to let them know that this is just a recommendation on starting the process. I will not come across as a trainer that has high expectations, as I will want to meet the client where they currently are and slowly help them build confidence in overcoming limiting factors in their lifestyle fitness journey. I will encourage clients to look at how they feel after trying these methods, and see where they struggle and what we can tailor to help them meet their needs so they can feel like they are meeting a goal they have set. These unusually dark connotations all add to the obscurity of the feeling Orwell is trying to depict and leave the read mystified about what is going to happen. In addition to this Orwell applies various similes, metaphors, repetition and symbolism to convey different emotions across to the reader. An example of the similes used is on the second page, a helicopter skimmed down between the roofs, hovered like a bluebottle. This clever expression compares the hovering helicopter with a bluebottle fly. The helicopter snooping about annoying and hassling people just like the hovering pest Orwell wants it to be related with. The repetition used within these two pages is based around the block capital written captions, BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU. These headings are repeated twice; they are outstanding and emphasize the authority and presence of this establishment. Again, Orwell doesnt go into detail about what this organization symbolizes or stands for; he simply proceeds with the descriptions. This lack of knowledge of Big Brother leaves the reader wanting to know more about what control this unexplained leader has over the society. Both the changes and the inertia of traditions are the backdrop of a very active and dynamic womens movement. The Philippines is a main player in the international womens arena and this is anchored on a very vibrant local womens movement. Numerous organizations and Nags exist for the cause of gender equality and other related women issues. This puts the gender equality issues at the forefront Of national discourse and precludes further downslide of women status in the modern Philippine society. Indeed, there are many handles for the changes to happen. These legal and policy gains resulted from the strong voice of women that started even during the anti-dictatorship struggle that culminated with the ascension of Corcoran Aquinas as the first woman president of the country. The 1987 Constitution states two prominent provisions. Discovering The Gender Pay Gap The problem of gender differences in salary raises a lot of concerns as to its factors, processes and measurement among social scientists and policy makers all over the world. Gender-based inequality is a phenomenon that affects the majority of the worlds cultures, religions, nations and income groups [5]. When scientists speak of the gender gap these days, they are usually referring to systematic differences in the outcomes that men and women achieve in the labor market. These differences are seen in the percentages of men and women in the labor force, the types of occupations they choose, and their relative incomes or hourly wages [4]. There have been significant increases in the labor supply of women in the last decades both in developed and developing countries. For instance, in the United States female participation in the paid labor force changed drastically in the course of the 20th century: in 1880 only 17% of all American women at working ages participated in the labor market, by 2000 this number had risen to more than 60% [3]. Nevertheless, the Global Gender Gap Index 2007 showing that no country in the world has yet reached equality between women and men the highest ranking country has closed a little over 80% of its gender gap while the lowest ranking country has closed only a little over 45% of its gender gap. Factors that describe the gender pay gap Among various factors that describe the gender pay gap the most important ones are historical, cultural and economic. Describing historical factors of the gender pay gap, we have to mention that after industrialization women became secondary workers in the labor market; they entered the labor market in smaller numbers and for shorter periods than did men. Moreover, occupations and industries were highly segregated by sex, partly because employers developed explicit policies to segregate the workplace and bar married women from employment [4]. Hence the wage structure changes over time but the historical evolution of well-defined systems of jobs and firms has created relatively stable segmentation by occupation. As for cultural factors, they are closely connected to the historical events. The development of modern family patterns during the past decades has been accompanied by substantial changes in social norms, values and gender relations all over the world. In most of modern societies women with higher returns to human capital and fewer children, increase their investments in education and their attachment to the market. The economic factors are also very important. Because women are very likely to interrupt their career for children bearing period, and employers avoiding workers with high quit rates (for economic reasons), therefore, women comparing to men are less likely to receive stable well-paid jobs. Micro-level processes that cause the gender pay gap As wage differences among workers can be explained by processes that match individuals to jobs, we should research how individual women and men are sorted into different positions and thereby obtain different levels of reward. Margaret Mooney Marini and Pi-Ling Fan have conducted a research The gender gap in earnings at career entry in which the micro-level mechanisms of the gender wage gap were investigated. Those are gender differences in job-related skills and credentials, adult family roles, work and family aspirations, the availability and use of information and influence via social networks; gender discrimination in hiring and job placement by employers. The results of the research showed that explanatory mechanisms focusing on the characteristics of workers explained only 30 % of the gender difference in wages. But the gender differences in aspirations and in job-related skills and credentials were the most important in accounting for the gender pay gap. The allocation of women and men to different jobs by employers, and informal processes of social contact and social interaction via networks play an important role in wage determination at career entry. Moreover, gender differences in family structure had no significant direct effect when the effect of worker qualifications and aspirations were considered [6]. How to measure the gender gap One of the instruments to measure the gender gap is the Global Gender Gap Index introduced by the World Economic Forum. This index is a framework for capturing the magnitude of gender disparities. It aims to be a tool for benchÂÂ ­marking and tracking global gender-based inequalities on economic, political, education- and health-based criteria [5]. The structure of this index is in the Appendix. In this paper we are interested only in the economic participation and opportunity analyzed by the Index. This area is captured through three concepts: the participaÂÂ ­tion gap, the remuneration gap and the advancement gap. The participation gap is captured through the difference in labor force participation rates. The remuneration gap is captured through a hard data indicator (ratio of estimated female-to-male earned income) and a qualitative variable calculated through the World Economic Forums ExecuÂÂ ­tive Opinion Survey (wage equality wages for similar work). Finally, the gap between the advancement of women and men is captured through two hard data statistics (the ratio of women to men among legislators, senior officials and managers, and the ratio of women to men among technical and professional workers). Conclusion The gender gap is a difference in outcomes that men and women achieve in the labor market. Because labor market rewards derive from labor market positions, it is important to understand why women receive less rewarding positions and what the mechanism of the gender pay gap is. There are historical, cultural and economic factors that influence gender pay gap. Historically occupations are segregated by sex, but women return to human capital more often than in the past and decrease their quit rates during childbearing period. Among micro-level processes that cause gender pay gap, the most important are gender differences in aspirations, job-related skills and definite social networks inclusion. In order to measure gender gap scientists use the Global Gender Gap Index which examines the gap between men and women in four fundamental categories: economic participation and opportunity, educational attainment, political empowerment, health and survival. How to Tame a Wild Tongue/Mother Tongue Essay

What’s makes someone an American? Am I more American because my skin is white and I speak perfect English? Or am I more American because my family immigrated here 100 years earlier than most? Our country is a melting pot of different races, backgrounds and beliefs. Two women, who are the children of immigrants, share their stories of growing up in America. The first is Gloria Anzaldua, a Chicana who grew up in South Texas. The first chapter of her book, Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza is titled â€Å"How to Tame a Wild Tongue†. She describes life as a young woman who is too Spanish for Americans and too American for Spanish. The second is Amy Tan, a daughter of immigrants who fled China in the 1940s. In her essay â€Å"Mother Tongue† she recalls growing up with a Mother who could not speak perfect English. While these women are from two different backgrounds, their experiences with languages are the same. Both women have expressed the idea that language used with family, the educational system and society shape us as individuals. When a person is at home, surrounded by those who are nearest and dearest to them, they let their guard down. The languages we speak around our families are often different from the ones we use in the professional world. Tan states this opinion in her essay; she remembers a time when she was conscious of the English she was using around her mother. She was walking down the street with her mother and using the English that she did not use around her mother. She also states that this is the same type of English she uses with her husband. She writes that this type of language â€Å"has become our language of intimacy, a different sort of English that relates to family talk, the language I grew up with.† (Tan, page 143) Anzaldua has a similar opinion when it comes to the language of our family; she writes â€Å"My â€Å"home† tongues are the languages I speak with my sister and brothers, with my friends.†(Anzaldua, page 134) Her type of language is a considered a subcategory of Spanish, called Chicano Spanish. Anzaldua also explains that in her culture she had to learn different dialects of Spanish, according to region that person was from. These two women played chameleon with their languages, blending in perfectly with their surroundings, wearing a mask to the world until they were home. At home, they were safe to use the language they grew up using without fear of judgment. â€Å"To get a good job, you need to speak English well. What’s the use of all your education if you speak English with an accent?† (Anzaldua, page 132) Anzaldua grew up with the idea that her imperfect English would limit her opportunities, even with an education. When she became a high school teacher, she was reprimanded for giving her students literature by Chicanos. Tan’s educational experiences were somewhat different than Anzaldua. Her limitations were set by test scores in English and Math. Tan writes that her English scores â€Å"were not good enough to override the opinion that my true abilities lay in math and science, because in those areas I achieved A’s and scored in the ninetieth percentile or higher.† (Tan, page 145) While both women felt limited in their educational world, they both found a love for writing. They both became a voice for their people. One thing that shapes a person’s perspective of themselves is how their society views them. Tan, at a young age, would often have to speak for her mother. Her mother’s English was view as â€Å"broken† or â€Å"limited† by society. This had a profound effect on how Tan viewed her mother’s English; she writes â€Å"because she expressed them imperfectly her thoughts were imperfect.† (Tan, page 144) Anzaldua’s Chicano Spanish was viewed as â€Å"poor Spanish† by society. â€Å"If a person, Chicana or Latina, has a low estimation of my native tongue, she also has a low estimation of me.† (Anzaldua, page 136) Society, the community in which these women lived, has looked down on the English that they speak. Both women feel that their language is â€Å"poor†, â€Å"broken†, or â€Å"limited† by society’s standards. Gloria Anzaldua and Amy Tan were raised in two different cultures, with two different types of English. They grew up in families that spoke with accents and different dialects. Both women navigated their way through the educational system, which was not designed with them in mind. They were also viewed by their communities as being limited because their home language was not the standard. These two women also fought the system that wished to limit their voices. They became writers, they wrote their stories of how their language, for better or worse shaped who they were.
